Leaders Of The Times: Gitar MF—Polish Fire Power
by THERESA CARDAMONE

When Gitar MF stands in silhouette, the trained eye can see every line of his pedigree reflected in his form, from the upright carriage, high-set neck and sloping shoulder of his sire, the legendary Afire Bey V; to the smooth muscling, straight legs, and dry, refined face of his imported pure Polish dam, Gitara. When he moves, his genetics compel him to snap his knees above level in an effortless, powerful trot, or bound forth in a lofty canter. Gitar is the perfect combination of Arabian form and function.

Gitar’s paternal line is extraordinary: from his sire, legendary show horse and supreme sire Afire Bey V, through the even more sensational Huckleberry Bey (U.S. National Reserve Champion as a Futurity Stallion and English Pleasure horse), to National Champion Bay El Bey, to 1962 U.S. National Champion Stallion Bay Abi—and back to the relatively recent desert bred import, Mirage. He was a 1919 product of the Saba Bedouins, and belonged first to Iraq’s King Faisal and England’s Lady Wentworth before being imported to America by Roger Selby in 1930.

On the maternal side, Gitar’s roots are firmly planted in Poland soil. His dam, Gitara, was bred at Michalów State Stud, northeast of Krakow. By Eskimos (Aquinor x Eskapada) and out of the great El Paso mare, Gildia, it is a dam line of exceptional mothers, with Gilza, Gastronomia, Ofirka, and Fryga II leading back through the generations to Polish foundational mares Gazella II and her mother Abra, a desert-bred foaled in 1904.

Due to his extraordinary motion, correct conformation and classic breed type, Gitar was a major winner in halter classes as a breeding stallion. In both 2002 and 2003, he was named the Canadian National Reserve Champion Stallion, with top ten honors in both the U.S. and Canada in 2001. He was also the East Coast Champion Stallion in 2004, and held Regional Champion Stallion titles in Regions 12, 14, 15 and 16. It should come as no surprise that he was also a big winner in English Pleasure classes.
