Leaders Of The Times: Cedar Ridge Arabians
by SARAH JAYNE JOHNSON

Cedar Ridge Arabians (CRA) is located in Jordan, Minnesota, about 45 minutes’ drive from Minneapolis. The main farm is just about 500 acres of beautiful grass pastures, with indoor and outdoor arenas and trainers for year-round training.

A family run business, CRA was established by Dick and Lollie Ames, along with their daughter Lara, dedicating nearly 50 years to breeding and showing the Arabian horse, with halter, English and working western their specialty.

Lara Ames emphasized the importance of family involvement for Cedar Ridge Arabians, “It is huge; my dad, Hadley, and myself show, and our breeding manager is my cousin, Mike Brennan.”

This year at U.S. Nationals, 18 Cedar Ridge Arabians competed, including two horses showing in the hunter and western disciplines for the first time.

Among them, two earned championship titles, the first being Goblet of Fire CCF with Dick Ames in Arabian Pleasure Driving AAOTD unanimously, and the second going to GS Neapalotan RCF and Lara Ames in Arabian Gelding AAOTH.

Four reserve championships were earned by: Toi Slamtastic CRF and Dick Ames in Half-Arabian Pleasure Driving AAOTD; Ames Divine and trainer Josh Shino in Arabian English Pleasure Futurity; Jay Z with trainer Jody Strand in AWPA Half-Arabian Futurity; and GS Neapalotan RCF with trainer Alcides Rodrigues in Arabian Junior Geldings. Cedar Ridge also garnered 12 top tens.

Their dedication to the breed has brought the Ames family much success, with awards inside the ring, from regionals to nationals in both halter and performance competitions and out, recognized as the APAHA’s Breeder of the Year by their peers. The family’s hands-on involvement in all areas is what makes the farm run. Some of their most famous horses in the industry include Matoi, Allfired UPP, and Toi Slamtastic CRF, just to name a few.

Cedar Ridge Arabians also offers a full-service training and marketing facility on the property with the help of trainer Laura Rodel, and a riding club as well, taught by instructor Stephanie Davisson. They take on clients of all skill levels, whether it is just to learn the basics or seeking to reach the national level.

Lara expressed her family’s excitement for horses going into training for the 2019 show season, “We are especially looking forward to two of our coming 3-year-olds who will compete for the first time. We hope to have as successful a 2019 as we did in 2018.”
