ASA Scandalous Affair—A Red Hot Black Stallion Spectacle
by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI

Alistar Arabians’ owner, Kim Butler Blevins, is in the thick of making a life-long dream a reality. “My husband and I breed on a very small scale, only one to two foals a year, and a goal of ours has always been to breed, ride and show our own national champion. Like many young girls growing up, I dreamed of one day owning a black stallion, so ‘Scandal’ has already made that dream a reality, and we believe he could be the one to complete the other part of the dream.”

Four-year-old home-bred stallion ASA Scandalous Affair (Always A Jullyen V x Sweet Saphire V) certainly has the hereditary ‘goods’ to earn those red championship roses. His sire is Varian breeding royalty and his dam is a full sister to the late, great breeding stallion Sundance Kid V. Kim maintains, “Scandal’s resemblance to Sundance Kid is uncanny!” Scandal’s trainer, Dale Brown agrees, “Scandal’s show and stud career is young, same as he. But make no mistake, he enters the show pen with a hefty, proud Varian ‘look at me’ presence. He has already created remarkable interest as a breeding stud with several mares committed to his first breeding season, which is very impressive for a 4-year-old! Our show competition goals for 2019 are to show Scandal very selectively later this year, completing the 2019 show season at U.S. Nationals in the AWPA class. We believe Scandal’s charisma and pedigree destine him to produce champions same as his sire has done.”

Standing at stud with Dale Brown Performance Horses for this year’s breeding season, ASA Scandalous Affair is homozygous black, carrying two copies of the black allele which determines hereditary characteristics, and who will always produce black-based foals regardless of his mate. He has also tested negative for CA, LFS and SCID, and is Breeders Sweepstakes, Scottsdale Signature Stallion and Region 12 Spotlight Stallion nominated, as well as AWPA enrolled.

Kim’s frame of mind concerning Scandal is personal, “I’m excited and scared, all at the same time! He is the only foal our Sweet Saphire V has produced for us, making him our miracle baby of sorts. I helped deliver Scandal, keeping him home until he went into training with Dale. He has this imposing presence, whether turned out and at play, or showing in the western pleasure pen. He’s bold and fearless yet laid back; and he favors sleeping above all his daily activities!”

Her dreams becoming reality more and more every day, Kim shares, “We are so fortunate to be living this pinnacle of dreams as Arabian horse breeders, breeding and showing our very own alluring and athletic black stallion. We thank Palmetto Arabians, Dale Brown Performance Horses and all the folks who have supported our vision to breed and show a Varian-bred black stallion. Sheila’s vision lives on with so many great Varian horses making a difference in all sectors of the Arabian horse industry, and we are privileged to be a part of furthering her mission at Alistar Arabians. Long live the V, by breeding a Scandal of your own!”
